It’s time to think spring, 2008, and get ready for another great fishing season! As I sit here putting this newsletter together, the snow continues to get deeper and deeper, which is good for our spring brown trout fishing.
2007 SUMMARY
We had another great fishing season last year starting with brown trout next to shore in April. Our May fishing out of Wilson Harbor produced excellent daily catches of king and coho salmon. We entered the Pro-Am Tournament out of Oak Orchard and finished 10th out of 35 pro teams. The early summer months of June and July we were able to fish the near shore waters for kings and steelhead. Mid to late summer, we were fishing the shipping lanes off shore for a nice mix catch of kings, steelhead, and trophy size coho salmon. Early fall we fished close to shore for staging kings, and off shore for immature salmon and steelhead.
FORCAST 2008
Chinook salmon fishing looks to be very good. The 2007 NYSDEC creel census showed that the catch rate of trout and salmon in May, June, and July was the 3rd to 4th highest in 23 years! The catch rate of Chinook in July set an all time record! Add to this our pen rearing stocking program and natural reproduction, and an excellent population of baitfish; we should be in for another great season.
OTHER NEWS
Each year there is a whole array of new lures to hit the market. Only one has caught my attention. The “Jitter Fly”. This fly mimics the appearance, motion and sound of distressed baitfish…,irresistible. This is the second year of hunting with my 1 ½ yr. old English Cocker Spaniel, Murphy. It’s been very rewarding to watch him work, flush, and retrieve pheasants and grouse. Next season, the plan is to use him to hunt and retrieve ducks. I had an outstanding trip out to Wyoming this past fall to hunt elk and antelope. I was able to harvest a 6x6 bull elk, and a trophy antelope. For me, it was the hunt of a lifetime.
SUMARY
Our fishing season will begin in early April for brown trout. We are planning to fish out of Wilson Harbor the 3rd week of May again this year. This is a great opportunity to fish for spring kings and coho with lots of action from surface lines to rigger lines. July and August we will be fishing from near shore to the shipping lanes for kings, coho, and steelhead. We will finish the season in the early fall next to shore for staging kings. For group charters, we can arrange to have another charter vessel available. We are available full time, Sunday through Saturday. Charters leave the dock at 6:00a.m., 2:00p.m., and 5:00p.m. for evening charters. Our website is in the process of being updated. www.fishinmagician.com
Prices this year will remain the same as last year. 8hrs. $460.00: 6hrs. $360.00 and evening $200.00. No hidden fees and no fuel surcharge.
